The Turnaround

In 1989 the Trinidadian government sought equity partners to take over the operations. Ispat signed a 10-year lease for the plant for $11 million a year with an option to make an outright purchase after five years...

Labor Troubles

Even as Ispat addressed past environmental problems and invested more money to upgrade plant facilities, officials of the local steelworkers union criticized CIL's safety policies and the alleged "slow pace of indigenization of upper management"...

The Road Ahead

In 2002, CIL added its third 1.5 million tpa DRI module. By the end of 2003, CIL operated DRI plants, an EAF-based steel-making plant, continuous casting facilities and a high-speed rolling mill.

It produced wire rods for use in a wide range of industrial applications, including the manufacture of welding electrodes, cables, chains, springs, fasteners, wire strands and wire ropes, pre-stressed concrete strands, tyre beads, as well as in the construction industry...
